Introduction to Tournaments

OGS tournaments provide you with a way to compete against a variety of opponents. They are usually a mix of real-time and correspondence style tournaments created for players of various skill levels.
Site-wide tournaments are organized and run by OGS Administrators but Groups are allowed to run their own tournaments for their members.
All tournament games on OGS are ranked games. Provisional players are allowed into most tournaments, however results from provisional games will not effect the rating of non-provisional opponents. Generally speaking, playing in tournaments is a great way to establish your real rating and remove your provisional status.
Note that because games are ranked there may be consequences for individuals who misrepresent their skill level, including disqualification.

Group Tournaments

Group Administrators have the option to create and run tournaments for members of their groups. The same tools that are used to create and run site tournaments are provided, including configuring:
  • Rank levels
  • Tournament type
  • Rules
  • Handicap settings
  • Time controls
Group Administrators who start a tournaments become the Tournament Director for that tournament. A Tournament Director has several management abilities, including:
  • Disqualify players
  • Decide the outcome of a tournament game in a certain player's favor (or as a draw)
  • Add or deduct tournament points from players during a running tournament
If you are acting as the Tournament Director for your group's tournament it is important to be a fair and impartial arbiter of those games for the enjoyment of all participants.

Tournament Types

OGS supports the following tournament types (with more planned to be added):

Simultaneous Round Robin

minimum tournament size: 2, maximum tournament size: 10
This tournament type supports a maximum of 10 players. Each player is paired with every other player in a single round and all games are played at the same time. The winner is decided by most wins using the Sum of Defeated Opponent's Scores (SODOS) as the tie-breaker in the event of a tie.

Swiss

minimum tournament size: 4
All players start the tournament with 0 points and are awarded 1 points for wins (0.5 points for a draw). The method of pairing players is similar to the Traditional McMahon system (see Pairing Methods for details). Tournaments run for: (P + 7 x Q) / 5 rounds. Where P is the number of players and Q is the number of qualified places.

Traditional McMahon

minimum tournament size: 4
This tournament type is somewhat similar to Swiss with some notable exceptions:
  • The number of rounds is decided up front
  • An upper and lower bar is defined when the tournament is created. Anyone above the upper bar starts with 0 points. Anyone below the upper bar but above the lower bar starts with a negative score representing their number of ranks below the upper bar. Anyone below the lower bar has the same base score. Lets look at an example:
Lets say we have a tournament where the upper bar is set at 3k and the lower bar is set at 6k. Here's how it would look:

Player Rank Points
user1 1k 0
user2 2k 0
user3 3k 0
user4 4k -1
user5 5k -2
user6 6k -3
user7 7k -3
user10 10k -3
We cover our pairing algorithm for McMahon later (see Pairing Methods for details). Ties are broken first by SOS (Sum of Opponent Scores) and, failing that, SODOS (Sum of Defeated Opponent Scores).

Simultaneous McMahon

minimum tournament size: 10
This tournament type is very similar to the Traditional McMahon tournament except that at the beginning of the tournament the field is divided into evenly sized groups of no more than 7 players. Each player will play simultaneously against all other group members. At the end of each round the groups are regenerated. Groups are generated based on the number of tournament points.
